New England Farmers Union (NEFU) and Land for Good (LFG) have partnered on an agreement that brings a benefit to both organizations—and to the farmers they serve. Members of NEFU can now get a 25 percent discount on the hourly rate for individual farm succession and transfer planning consulting services through LFG. “NEFU is pleased to work with Land for Good and recognizes that both organizations work hard to keep family agriculture viable for generations to come,” said NEFU President Roger Noonan. “We see this new benefit as a way to serve NEFU members by positively impacting their bottom line.”
“We believe a team approach is the best way for farm families to tackle farm succession and transfer planning,” said LGF Executive Director Kathy Ruhf. “It’s critical to form a supportive team so that the family isn’t doing this alone. The goal of transferring a farm should focus on legacy and the future of a working farm, not death and taxes.”
“Bringing in experts early to help with the process—as much as 10 to 15 years before the planned transfer—is critical,” added LFG Deputy Director Jim Hafner. “Farm transfer planning early in the development of a farm business has benefits for its viability and growth potential before the transfer. It’s never too late—or too early—to begin the process.”
“We’re proud to be a member of NEFU,” Hafner added. “Their recognition of the importance of farm transfer planning is further evidence of NEFU’s foresight in supporting the needs of its members—and a prosperous future for New England agriculture.”
Farm succession and transfer are critical issues for thousands of farm families in New England. An estimated 70 percent of farmland will change hands in the next 20 years. LFG supports farmers in making good decisions throughout the transfer planning process. LFG can help farmers:
- Explore and evaluate options
- Work through important decisions
- Find and coordinate advisors
- Identify and bring on a successor
- Develop and organize the necessary documents for a successful transition
In addition to this member benefit, NEFU offers access to quality insurance products; discounts on hotel, car rental and other services; and the ability to participate in setting NEFU’s policy. See more about NEFU benefits, join NEFU or contact NEFU.
